The gems have been set in 6 prong 14kt yellow gold-filled settings. The total carat weight of the topaz is 3.50 carats. The gems have VVS clarity, very slight inclusions are only visible with the aid of a 10X's loupe. The topaz are rather large. I am including both comfort clutches and 14kt yellow gold-filled butterfly earring backs with clear disks. Both these earring backs are great for heavy earrings because they distribute the weight over a wide area. The comfort clutch measure 11 mm's wide, the disks measure 10 mm's wide. The comfort clutch fit snugly on the post, and prevent earring loss. I have pictured the earrings showing both types of earring backs. Topaz is a gemstone of all colours. Some topaz is allochromatic, which means that its colour is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure rather than by an element of its basic chemical composition. Imperfections at the atomic level in topaz crystal structure can cause it's colour. Topaz is also pleochroic, meaning that the gem can show different colours in different crystal directions. This also includes white/silver topaz. Topaz has never been synthesized, but a number of imitations exist, including quartz and glass. Topaz is an 8 on Mohs' scale of hardness, quartz is 7 and regular glass is 5. All the mystic type of topaz come about by diffusion coating or surface treatment. The white/silver topaz is a natural occurrence of topaz. Please be aware that topaz can be confused with clear quartz. Topaz is a tougher and more precious gemstone than its imitations. Many consumers know topaz as simply the inexpensive blue gem. It is surprising to learn that its blue colour is hardly ever natural; it's almost always caused by treatment. Natural blue topaz is very pale in nature. Topaz actually has an exceptionally wide colour range. Colourless topaz is plentiful, but is much scarcer than quartz. There is no reason to accept any white/silver topaz that is not eye clean. White topaz may also be called silver topaz, so white and silver topaz colour names are interchangeable.

With reasonable care, they can last for generations. Karat gold filled is made by using heat and pressure to permanently bond a layer of gold to a core of brass or other base metal. It is not the same as gold plated, which is a cheap, thin coating of gold only a molecule thick. Karat gold filled has around 100 times more gold in it than gold plated. The surface of karat gold filled settings are totally covered with a thick layer of karat gold, and that is what comes in contact with your skin, all gold. It does not discolor or flake off like gold plate does. As a high quality jeweler's metal, gold filled is a way to have affordable, heirloom quality jewelry at one twentieth of the cost of solid gold. All gold is yellow. There is no such thing as red, pink, rose, green or white gold. When jewelers speak of colored gold, they mean colored gold alloys.
In the jewelry industry, the quantity of gold-filled settings must be at least 1/20th by weight of the total product. 10 karat signifies 10 parts of 24 parts are gold. 14 karat signifies 14 parts of 24 parts are gold.
